Why we like this Student Card
  • Low APR - The 14.99% variable rate is very low compared to other student credit cards, plus there are no finance charges for purchases through March 2010.
  • 5% Cash Back on Rotating Categories - Discover publishes the categories on which you will earn 5% cash back on their website. The 2009 calendar is currently available. This gives you a chance to time your purchases to maximize your cash back.
What to watch
  • Tiered Cash Back on Regular Purchases - Because of the tiered cash back structure, you only earn 0.25% on your first $3,000 of annual regular purchases. Also, you only earn 0.25% cash back on all warehouse store purchases.
  • Cash Advance Fees - Starting in January 2010, Discover will charge a 5% fee ($10 minimum) on all cash advances. If you are planning to use your card frequently for cash advances, you may want to find a card with lower fees.
